Message from the President

Fresh this fall...

Ethical fundraising

When was the last time you spoke with the Board President or the CEO/Executive Director of your non-profit about organizational capacity? If you are the Board President or CEO, when did you last speak with each other about the topic?

Organizational capacity. It is so much more than a buzz word, and really deserves our attention. It is often a critical consideration by major funders of our organizations.

An article in the Alliance for Children & Families Magazine, Spring 2003 issue, by Bob Jones, PhD, discusses the role of organizational excellence as a key to effective fund development. He begins, "Success in fund development clearly involves good strategy, appropriate tactics, and a well-executed plan."

I wanted to yell it from the roof tops! It is so true. No matter how excellent our programs and services might be – and surely they are all top notch because we have focused our time and financial resources on them ... No matter how well-developed our donor base and donor relationships might be – we need to be sure we are not setting ourselves up for future problems. We must not fall victim to under-developing and under-funding our organizational and administrative capacity. That is the very stuff that will help us articulate a strong mission, vision, and goals, with a compelling statement of our needs and abilities.

The article encourages organizations to begin with "a self-assessment and develop a plan and then build upon current assets." Dr. Jones provides information about a resource for doing this - The McKinsey Company Framework for Capacity Building, available on the web. This can help your organization assess its capacity, clarify its aspirations, and plan its strategic investments.

Additional information is available at www.venturephilanthropypartners.org

I encourage you to give this some thought. Ask the tough questions of your Board President and CEO. This is part of the hard work that our community depends on us to do as Development Officers. It is necessary if we are to remain, or become, vital community resources.

PJ Watters, President

Inland Northwest Development Council

Local Capital & Endowment Campaigns

Is your organization working on a Capital Campaign or an Endowment Campaign? Would you be willing to share information about it on the INDC website, to be accessed only by INDC members?

We added a new web page to our site entitled Local Campaigns - Capital and Endowment Campaigns, so that any of us working on a major campaign, or anticipating launching such a campaign, can be better prepared for what we might face in our community.

We hope you will use this listing to become informed and to inform others about the feasibility of their own plans to launch and complete a successful campaign. If you are calling on someone to make a major gift, this information will help you see who else might be contacting them and for what purposes.

All we are asking you to list is the campaign purpose, fundraising goal, start date, and contact person. Details about silent and public phases and progress toward goals can - and should - be obtained by calling the contact person, rather than by being listed on the site.

Please send any information you want to list to: indc@indc.net

2004 AFP International Conference, Seattle, WA

Association of Fundraising Professionals

International Conference

March 14 – 17, 2004

Washington State Convention Center, Seattle, WA

The AFP International Conference on Fundraising is the largest gathering of fundraisers anywhere and it is coming to Seattle. Approaching its 41st year, the Conference has become the premier resource for fundraisers to network, learn, and discover new products and services.

At 26,000 members and climbing, AFP is the world’s largest community of professional fundraisers.

The AFP International Conference on Fundraising is the premier educational opportunity for fundraising professionals. With nearly 200 sessions, no area of fundraising is overlooked. Here is your opportunity to:

  • interact with colleagues about the issues we face professionally
  • learn from practitioners about the latest trends and future challenges
  • tap the combined experience and knowledge of our presenters
  • attend sessions that will help you develop new skills, or take a refresher course.

There’s more to the Conference than great educational sessions.

  • Exciting plenary speakers, leaders in philanthropy, will inspire you with their accomplishments.
  • Exhibitors at our Exposition on Fundraising and Philanthropy can introduce you to innovative new products and services that will help you reach new contributors and inspire your regular donors. Spend time at the Exposition, and be sure to thank our exhibitors for their support.
  • If you have been contemplating taking the CFRE Certification Exam the CFRE Survey Course and Exam are being offered the two days prior to the conference.   You can review with your colleagues and take the exam without having to travel any further.
  • Don’t miss the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones during the various receptions and the AFP Awards for Philanthropy Banquet.

Conference information should be arriving in your mailboxes soon, but in the meantime, to register, peek at the conference schedule, and learn about special activities being planned for your enjoyment visit www.afpnet.org and click on International Conference in the sidebar.

If you are not a member of AFP and would like to be, we have a special opportunity just for you.  Join for just $100   (regularly $250), the difference between member and non-member registration fees. For more information on becoming a member of the Washington Chapter at this special rate, contact Amanda at the AFP Washington Chapter office: afp@shirleybishopinc.com or 206-367-8704 to request the special application form you must use to qualify for the $100 special.

No other event can match the opportunities — educational, professional and social — that the AFP International Conference on Fundraising provides. You won’t want to miss it. I look forward to seeing many of our local INDC members at the AFP International Conference on March 14-17, 2004, at the  Washington State Convention and  Trade Center in Seattle.

Stacey Marsh, member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Washington State Chapter
