About 35 INDC members and guests had the opportunity to hear from three of the 2007 Inland Northwest Philanthropy Award winners at the November 1 INDC member social.
Linda Finney moderated a panel made up of Kyle Weir -- winner of the Outstanding Young Philanthropist award, Ray Lawton of Lawton Printing – winner of the Small Business Philanthropy award, and Kathleen Kozlowski of STCU – winner of the Corporate Philanthropy award.
When asked why they became involved with particular charities, all the speakers agreed that it was because of a personal connection – someone asked them. That “someone” could be a boss, a spouse, a parent, a friend, a colleague or a priest. It may have been a simple request for money or a request to serve on a committee or board.
Our speakers also agreed that they were particular about who they supported. Ray Lawton said that his business decided to support just a few select charities so their gifts of time, treasure, and talent would have a significant impact. Kathleen Kozlowski said that STCU has certain criteria for their corporate philanthropy and that they seek partnerships and win-win situations.
Linda Finney asked the panel how to get more young people involved in philanthropy. Kyle said an organization needs a good mix of people – not just those that can give money. He said younger people bring great ideas, time, and talent -- but not necessarily money. Eventually, they will build a bond with the organization that can be profitable in the long run as well.
Kathleen Kozlowski suggested that new philanthropists should take a good look at an organization before they join the board. If you’re giving your time and talent, you want to be successful, says Kathleen. The organization needs to be financially stable – otherwise it’s a nightmare.
Ray Lawton offered a warning to charities seeking volunteer fundraisers and board members. “If your meetings aren’t fun and if your director is not personable, it won’t work,” he said. “If it isn’t fun it’s awful hard to have the energy to raise money.”
You can learn more about these and the other Philanthropy Award winners in the October 25 issue of the Journal of Business.
