President's Update

September and October have flown by and we will soon be in the holiday season. I hope everyone attended our Membership Reception. The executive committee was hoping to reach out to those non-profits that are not members or that have dropped their membership. We all benefit from a larger membership through the networking and education we have at our meetings. If you weren’t able to attend, I hope you’ll remember to invite the development officers you know to our next meeting on January 23rd.

The executive committee has talked with the Planned Giving Council about having some joint meetings this year. Last year we collaborated on the November meeting and we feel was a great success. You will be hearing more about that as we firm up the dates and programs.

Thanks to the effort of dedicated volunteers, Spokane’s Philanthropy celebration is back. By now, you know the names of the winners and heard them speak at the Membership Social. Spokane is very blessed to have many, many dedicated philanthropists. With over 800 non-profits in the Inland Northwest, we each need support. We each have those special individuals and companies that we know we can rely on to support our causes. It’s wonderful to have a way to say thank you to them. The committee will be meeting soon to discuss this year’s celebration and how we can make it bigger and better next year. If you have input, please contact Keith O’Brian or one of the other committee members. And don’t forget to keep the Philanthropy Celebration in mind and think about who you will nominate next year.

Have a happy holiday season and remember to slow down and enjoy it.

Kerry Wiltzius

INDC President

Philanthropy Awards Wrap Up

About 35 INDC members and guests had the opportunity to hear from three of the 2007 Inland Northwest Philanthropy Award winners at the November 1 INDC member social.

Linda Finney moderated a panel made up of Kyle Weir -- winner of the Outstanding Young Philanthropist award, Ray Lawton of Lawton Printing – winner of the Small Business Philanthropy award, and Kathleen Kozlowski of STCU – winner of the Corporate Philanthropy award.

When asked why they became involved with particular charities, all the speakers agreed that it was because of a personal connection – someone asked them.  That “someone” could be a boss, a spouse, a parent, a friend, a colleague or a priest.  It may have been a simple request for money or a request to serve on a committee or board.

Our speakers also agreed that they were particular about who they supported.  Ray Lawton said that his business decided to support just a few select charities so their gifts of time, treasure, and talent would have a significant impact.  Kathleen Kozlowski said that STCU has certain criteria for their corporate philanthropy and that they seek partnerships and win-win situations.

Linda Finney asked the panel how to get more young people involved in philanthropy.  Kyle said an organization needs a good mix of people – not just those that can give money.  He said younger people bring great ideas, time, and talent -- but not necessarily money.  Eventually, they will build a bond with the organization that can be profitable in the long run as well.

Kathleen Kozlowski suggested that new philanthropists should take a good look at an organization before they join the board.  If you’re giving your time and talent, you want to be successful, says Kathleen.  The organization needs to be financially stable – otherwise it’s a nightmare.

Ray Lawton offered a warning to charities seeking volunteer fundraisers and board members.  “If your meetings aren’t fun and if your director is not personable, it won’t work,” he said.  “If it isn’t fun it’s awful hard to have the energy to raise money.”

You can learn more about these and the other Philanthropy Award winners in the October 25 issue of the Journal of Business.
